To start playing poker, you first have to understand the poker rules involved while playing. Each game has different rules, but most poker rules are the same. These poker rules are based off texas holdem. If you would like to learn about the poker rules for other poker games, check out their individual pages; Seven Card Stud – Omaha. Make sure you know all the poker rules before starting to play.

As the game begins, every player is dealt two cards face down. These are referred to as hole cards or pocket cards. Right after the hole cards are dealt, the first round of betting, or so-called pre-flop, starts with the player to the immediate left of the big blind, and continues clockwise. After all bets are called, all bets are placed into the pot. When the first betting round is completed, the dealer exposes the next three cards face up on the table. These three cards are called the "flop." The second round of betting begins with the immediate remaining player seated to the left of the Button and continues clockwise.

After all bets are called, the dealer exposes the next card face up on the table. This card is called the "turn." The third round of betting again begins with the immediate remaining player seated to the left of the Button and continues clockwise.

After the third betting round is complete, the dealer exposes the next card face up on the table. This card is called the "river." The last round of betting again begins with the immediate remaining player seated to the left of the Button and continues clockwise. If more than one player remains after the fourth round of betting, there is a showdown; all players who remain in the game reveal their hands.

Generally, the player who made the initial bet, or the player who made the last raise, shows his hand first. The player with the highest-ranked hand wins the pot. It is possible to use both hole cards, one hole card, or no hole cards (play the board), in an effort to make a hand. If there is a tie for the highest ranking hand, the pot is split evenly. After the pot is pushed to the winner, the Button moves one player to the left, and the next hand starts.

Note that every round of betting requires players to act, starting with the first player to the left of the dealer who is still in the hand. That player may either check or bet. Then, each player to the left of the first player checks or bets, if no one betted. The first bet by any player is the opening bet. If a bet has been made, each player must fold, call, or raise. Once a player folds, he loses the chips that he has put into the pot and has given up his hand.
