Objective
The objective of Texas Holdem is to get the best five-card-combination out of the two hole cards and five community cards. Through rounds of betting, each player places a bet based on his legitimate hand, or the impression that he holds a strong hand. Then, each opponent, depending on his hand, may be convinced to fold.

The Deck
Texas Holdem uses the standard 52-card deck.

Number of Players
Texas Holdem is generally played with eight to ten players though the number of players can range from two to ten.

Antes
Prior to dealing the cards, in some games, players need to put in antes (a set amount.) Antes do not count toward a player's bet on the first round of betting.

Blinds
The player that is to the left of the dealer's button is the small blind; the player that is to the left of the small blind is the big blind. The small blind and the big blind are required to put up mandatory bets before the cards are dealt. The amount of the blind will depend on the limit of the game.

If the limit is $5/$10 for the game, the small blind will be half of the amount of the small limit ($2.50), and the big blind will be the small limit ($5.) The money a player puts in for the blinds do count toward the first round of betting. Therefore, if everyone checks, the small blind will have to put in another $2.50 and the big blind can check to see the flop. Either of the small or big blind can also choose to raise when it is his turn to act.

Button
The button is the also known as the dealer button. It rotates around the table clockwise after each hand, to indicate who the dealer is in each round. The button helps the game to stay organized and to keep the order. It also serves to remind each player whose turn it is to bet, and his position.

Betting Limits
Betting types vary in individual types of games, and Texas Holdem can be played as no limit, pot-limit or limit.

  • In No Limit Holdem, players may bet or raise any amount of chips that they have in front of them when it is their turn to act. However, the opening bet in each round must be at least equal to the amount of the big blind. In addition, any raise must be in an amount at least equal to the previous bet or raise.
  • In Pot Limit Holdem, the bets and raises are limited by the amount of money in the pot at the time the wager is made. For example, if there is $4 in the pot and a player wagers $4, then the raiser can call that bet (make the pot $12), and then raise the entire pot. After that player finished raising, the pot will be $24. The player who raises can count his call as part of the pot.
  • In Limit Holdem, the size of the bets and raises is predetermined by the table stakes. Typical examples of the table stakes are $1/$2, and $5/$10. Note that the smaller amount is size of bets and raises made in the first two betting rounds while the larger amount is the size of bets and raises made in the final two betting rounds. In limit games, there could be no more than one bet and three raises in any betting round. Once that third raise is made, no more raises can be made in that betting round. This is referred as the Three Raise Maximum Rule.
